JACK IN THE BOX CASE STUDY

INNOVATION IN THE PALM

OF YOUR HANDS

THE CHALLENGE

TCE has been an innovation partner with Jack in the Box since 2015. Jack in the Box initially approached TCE to identify and develop innovative products focused around portability. In 2016, Jack in the Box again sought TCE’s expertise to identify innovative opportunities across four consumer trends: customization, new forms or functions, quality innovation, and meal occasion and promotional opportunities.

THE SOLUTION

In both projects, TCE applied a holistic philosophy rather than jumping immediately into product development. In 2015, TCE identified overarching meal periods or menu platforms (e.g. brunch) that could be supported — or even enhanced by — portability innovation. In 2016, TCE proposed menu platforms that built upon Jack in the Box’s brand equity while addressing the underlying consumer behaviors and preferences derived from the four articulated trends.

THE BUZZ

Jack in the Box launched Brunchfast, a platform that TCE had proposed in fall 2016, including items like the Brunch Burger. Munchie Mashups — late-night-inspired, loaded tater tots that built upon the equity of existing Munchie Meals— are currently in test throughout Northern California.
